Description

"A gritty, heart-pounding tale of betrayal and bloody vengeance. I loved every single word." â€”John Gwynne

The Pariah begins a new epic fantasy series of action, intrigue and magic from Anthony Ryan, a master storyteller who has taken the fantasy world by storm.

Born into the troubled kingdom of Albermaine, Alwyn Scribe is raised as an outlaw. Quick of wit and deft with a blade, Alwyn is content with the freedom of the woods and the comradeship of his fellow thieves. But an act of betrayal sets him on a new path - one of blood and vengeance, which eventually leads him to a soldier's life in the king's army.

Fighting under the command of Lady Evadine Courlain, a noblewoman beset by visions of a demonic apocalypse, Alwyn must survive war and the deadly intrigues of the nobility if he hopes to claim his vengeance. But as dark forces, both human and arcane, gather to oppose Evadine's rise, Alwyn faces a choice: can he be a warrior, or will he always be an outlaw?

"This makes a rich treat for George R.R. Martin fans." â€”Publishers Weekly (starred review)

Good book to start the series. Excited to continue reading the rest of Alwyn’s story.

Very entertaining. From someone who has read The Game of Thrones series to The Wheel of Time and all the fantasy and sci-fi in between, this may not be the best, but it’s certainly a good read.

The story building is great and seamless, every character has weight to their story without it being too overwhelming.

I started off disliking the author’s writing style, as it seemed a bit too eloquent. But the dislike quickly faded as I began to really enjoy the characters. He injects just enough humor to make it fun without detracting from the grimness required of this genre, kind of like Abercrombie does. Looking forward to the sequel.

The world he grows is fascinating. The lead character is so multifaceted. My favorite part is Anthony Ryan finally to me figured out how to write about something mystical and fulfill the mystical part of it!! His past series I felt as if he didn’t hit the level that was needed.

The author has penned a novel with great pace and fun. Characters come in and out of the story focused around the protagonist. Real loss and intrigue Enough action to keep everyone interested. I can’t wait to read the next one.

As an avid listener of audiobooks I found myself enraptured with the main character almost immediately. The story flowed beautifully if unexpectedly at times. I can go on and on however… I find myself writing this most likely sloppy review with a singularly pure intention to express. “It’s worth every penny, and you shouldn’t hesitate.â€
