Description

A #1 New York Times Bestseller

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the story of Daphne Bridgerton, in the first of her beloved Regency-set novels featuring the charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shondaland for Netflix.

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.

The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule...

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I’ve watched the show as it’s come out over the years and always enjoyed it, so I had no doubts that I’d enjoy the book. I will say that I found the relationship between Simon and Daphne seems to progress much fast in the book than the show, which I don’t love simply because I’m more of a slow burn gal. ‼️BIG SPOILERS & SA TW BELOW FOR THOSE WHO HAVE READ YET OR WATCHED THE SHOW ‼️ Beware CHAPTERS 17-18!!! Daphne’s way of having Simon … 👀 … inside of her is MUCH different in the book than in the show. In the book, Simon’s half asleep and still a bit drunk when it happens, and Daphne essentially takes advantage/assaults him. It was shocking to me and a bit triggering, and I wish there would have been a bit of a warning somewhere in the beginning of the book or chapter. Thank God the show handles the act differently.

I am somewhat biased in my review since I’m a lover of romance and period pieces but I think Quinn is a spectacular writer!! I cannot wait to read the next books in this series!!

I enjoyed the story, especially after watching the show. It was nice to get to learn more about each character. I will say chapter 18 caught me off guard and was very uncomfortable to read, obviously I didn’t enjoy this scene in the show, but the book makes it a little harder to get through. That would be the reason for 4/5 stars.

I loved this book! Very different from the show, but the books are always better. Some people put a trigger warning on this book, but if you are triggered by fictional characters in a story then you need to get a life.
