Taste of Darkness

This was my first dragon shifter book and couldn't have chosen a better book. Katie did an amazing job with the paranormal/fantasy aspect of the story. So much so that that it kept me reading until very late hours in the morning (I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even notice the time passing by that quickly).
This is the second installment of the series. Here we meet Drake our tortured hero that's spent several hundreds of years literally trapped in Hell and is now trying to adjust to this new-to-him world and enlists the help of charismatic wolf shifter Victoria to get better at it.
Now, admittedly, the story is a trope I'm not too fond of, which is friends to lovers. I feel there is already a connection and there is no obstacle to overcome so there is no build up. In this case, there is a little bit of tension between them because Drake has been away for too long and doesn't know what he's doing for one, and secondly, he feels he may not be worthy of her love. I liked that about their love story, but again, it's not my favorite trope.
I loved the suspense side of the story. You keep hearing glimpses of the past and of the villain but only very subtle, kind of just giving you clues of what was to come. She was giving me clues to decipher the riddle and find out who was the real villain and before the actual character did. At the same time, she kept throwing new characters and I kept wondering who was the monster of the story. And although I did figure out who the culprit of all of Drake's misery was, it did not take away the enjoyment of the book one bit. I wish I could say more but I feel if I do I could fall into spoiler territory. I will continue the series since I have a feeling there will be more coming. Too many awesome characters, dragons and otherwise that I definitely want to know more of.
