Description

The remarkable new novel in the Doc Ford series by New York Times–bestselling author Randy Wayne White.

Doc Ford’s old friend, General Juan Garcia, has gone into the lucrative business of smuggling Cuban baseball players into the U.S. He is also feasting on profits made by buying historical treasures for pennies on the dollar. He prefers what dealers call HPC items—high-profile collectibles—but when he manages to obtain a collection of letters written by Fidel Castro between 1960–62 to a secret girlfriend, it’s not a matter of money anymore. Garcia has stumbled way out of his depth.

First Garcia disappears, and then the man to whom he sold the letters. When Doc Ford begins to investigate, he soon becomes convinced that those letters contain a secret that someone, or some powerful agency, cannot allow to be made public.

A lot happened between Cuba and the United States from 1960–62. Many men died. A few more will hardly be noticed.

One of the most confusing, contrived plots I've ever tried to murk through. Pointless and, did I say? Confusing. Destined therefore for top awards, but a painful read.

The confusion some find is because the book is fact based and keeping confidence is essential to the safety of real people is key!
  • Really disappointing

So one of my favorite writers phoned another one in. Totally disjointed plot. How one can take Cuba, baseball, and Grapefruit League Fla and make it a hard to follow mess puzzles me. Seemed like a very lazy book although White claims its one of his favorites. After a couple of these, I may stop reading him even though I like the Doc Ford charactrr
  • Cuba Straits-bravo Randy!

I thought this novel was as good as it gets from Mr. White, and he is now clearly in the top three or four best sellers in this genre.

    Wildly improbable.

Yet another book from Mr White with a paper-thin plot, and not well written. A shame.
  • Poor. Nowhere near usual standards

A rambling disjointed effort that requires constant effort to avoid disengaging entirely. If this had been the first work of his that I read, it would have been the last... Way too much of Thomlinson's mumbo jumbo weirdness, poorly handled at that. Reads like the author was sharing the mescaline with Thomlinson...

I've enjoyed every Doc Ford book, but this one is horrible. A confused plot, improbable dialogue and situations, and waaay too much Tomlinson. Ford is almost MIA. Tomlinson's drug induced ramblings are OK in his previous small doses, but this, as they say, was a bad trip.
