Edited from a collection of letters, this 1789 work contains Gilbert White’s discoveries about English birds, animals and plants. Because he believed in distinguishing birds by observation rather than by collecting specimens, White one of the first to separate the similar-looking Common Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and Wood Warbler by means of their song.
