Saw the author interviewed on the Daily Show and was curious how this novel would compare to something y Walter Mosley. I’ll be reading more of this man’s work.

Superb writing. This book will be on movie screens soon. The description of the South to an outsider was mesmerizing.

This book was fantastic! I think it’s one of the only books I’ve read this year that I’ve given 5 stars to. I didn’t know what to expect going in, but the way the author mixes race and politics with a story about a serial killer in a small town is something I haven’t seen done so well before. I was really interested in both the story and the characters, and I was always excited to pick it up. That’s a good sign I think. Would definitely recommend to anyone into true crime or thrillers and I will be on the hunt for more from S.A. Cosby!

I am giving this book a 3/5 because of the way I think I like my thrillers to be written. I’m wondering if I would have had a different rating for this book had I listened to the audio version. I like my thrillers to be filled with lots of twists, turns, and suspense. I like to feel like I am always on the edge of my seat but I didn’t really get that with this book. Don’t me wrong, I think that the book was well written and I think that the he brings up plenty of topics worth discussing- The South, racism, self-hate, being Black in law enforcement, Christianity, etc. I actually enjoyed thinking about those concepts more than trying to figure out who the serial killer was. Another part of me feels like I was a little underwhelmed because this is everyday life for Black people in America. I did like Titus’ storyline and how he eventually works through his personal conflicts. I also loved his use of imagery. This is a book that I would be willing to revisit another time. I would be open to reading another novel by this author to see if a different book grabs my attention differently.

Too long and not gripping. Nice family dynamic.

Glad I discovered this author. Could not put the book down. Captured the troubles of small town southern living perfectly.
  • Page turner with a likeable yet flawed hero.
