Praise for The Jesus I Never Knew:

"This is the best book about Jesus I have ever read, probably the best book about Jesus in the whole century. Yancey gently took away my blinders and blazed the trail through my own doubting fears, pious know-it-all, and critical balderdash until I saw the Savior anew and thought I heard him ask me, 'Now whom do you say that I am?' and I understood the question as I never had before."

--Lewis B. Smedes, Senior Professor, Fuller Seminary

"Philip Yancey takes the reader with him on his very personal journey to Jesus. In The Jesus I Never Knew, I became convinced that the Jesus I met--in some ways for the first time--has known me all along. This book is destined to become a favorite--to recommend to those still seeking Jesus and to pass along to those who've met him, but long to know him more."

I wish I had come across this book many years ago. Mr. Yancey has brought together in one book what has taken me years to come to understand about the true Jesus through repeated study of scripture and visits to Israel. He brings out the real Jesus easily refuting many myths of Jesus passed down through generations of church teachings and secular misunderstandings. I can’t say I agree with every portrayal of Biblical characters in this book but of the main issue, ie, Jesus, I believe he is right on. For example Judas seems to be described as a confused and misrepresented disciple who maybe just went bad as he saw that Jesus was not going to resist the Roman government and be THE Messiah he was expecting. But this ignores what John tells us in Ch 12:4-6. He clearly is reported as being a thief, stealing the common money of the group. This occurs 6 days before Jesus enters Jerusalem for the last time. But the stealing had been going on for some time according to John. However this is a minor error in my view from what Mr. Yancey was trying to accomplish in this well written book. Namely that Jesus claimed to be God in the flesh and essentially proved it with His life, death and resurrection. Another thing I often see in literature about the true Jesus is what He gave up by coming into the world as a poor, weak baby in a backwoods time and place instead of coming in mighty power and riches into a ruling earthly family. But what He gave up by leaving the unconditional loving presence of His Father, complete adoration of the heavenly beings and command of the entire universe (to name only what I can only hope to imagine) to come to earth in ANY circumstance at all is beyond anything we can understand or comprehend. That is love above my wildest conception.

One of those books that I'd like to buy a copy for every one I know. Helped me to understand Jesus and his great love for us.
